AB As unfortunately forecasted, AIDS has become one of the leading causes
of mortality among American women aged 25-44 years; pertinent to our
locale, greater Boston women continue to rank as the most inaccessible,
underdiagnosed, undertreated, and consistently underserved population of
our HIV epidemic. In contrast, our neighborhood health center provides
comprehensive and interdisciplinary primary care to many HIV+ men. This
team model includes nutritional, chiropractic, allopathic,
accupunctural, gynecological, social, and other mental health approaches
to longitudinal HIV management. From an extensive intake to drug trial
participation to neuropathic accupuncture treatment to initial
hospitalization, our HIV+ patients collaborate with a web of health
providers; they pursue and frequently achieve patient-designed and
centered HIV health care. Like other HIV providers in our Northeastern
city, we work with a notable paucity of HIV+ women. Therefore, we aimed
to analyze and subsequently to ameliorate the distaff gap in HIV health
services. Firstly, a review of the literature provided many descriptions
of societal barriers to American women receiving primary HIV care.
Complementary, chart reviews and interviews with our HIV+ female
patients revealed reasons and happenstances for starting and receiving
care at our center. City wide and regionally, we qualitatively examined
and took inventory of current invitations and bridges between women and
HIV primary care. Further, we plan to enhance programatic links to find,
reach and care for our neighborhoods' women. Ultimately, we will
evaluate our outreach endeavors and quality assure our provision and
receipt of health care of HIV+ women.
